Adam Woodward, a registered patent attorney, focuses on handling complex intellectual property disputes across an array of intricate technology fields. Leveraging his background in chemical and biomolecular engineering, he represents clients in patents, copyright, and trademark litigation matters from startups to established corporations.

Adam’s extensive technical expertise encompasses biochemical engineering, pharmokinetics, monoclonal antibody engineering, semiconductor engineering, battery systems, electrochemistry, chemical process engineering, biochemistry, biologic pharmaceuticals, organic chemistry, process controls, and electronic devices. This breadth of knowledge underscores his versatility and ability to achieve successful outcomes for clients, particularly in the technology and life sciences sectors.

In addition to litigation, Adam also prosecuted patent and trademark applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, further showcasing proficiency in various technical domains including biomolecular engineering, inorganic chemistry, thermodynamics, materials science, medical devices, and software design/programming.

During law school, Adam clerked for Judge Timothy Batten of the Northern District of Georgia and Judge Alan O. Forst of Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeals. He pursued an M.A. in Bioethics Applied Ethics, gaining exposure to cutting-edge developments in biotechnology, medicine, and ethical theories. Adam holds a J.D. from Emory University with a keen interest in chemical and life sciences, exploring the intersection of law, ethics, and technology. At Emory, he was as an assistant managing editor for Emory’s Journal of Law and Religion and actively participated in the Moot Court Team.

Before law school, Adam earned a B.S. in Engineering from Cornell University, specializing in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. At Cornell, he conducted research on metal-oxide nanoparticles for lithium-ion battery electrodes in the Archer Lab. As one of the ten Kessler Engineering Entrepreneurship Fellows in his class, Adam gained hands-on experience assisting startup technology firms with early legal and technical hurdles, fueling his ongoing passion in this area.

Representative Matters

• Successfully represented plaintiff patent owner Gratuity, a medium-sized software company, in the District of Massachusetts against defendant Toast, a large cloud-based restaurant management software company. Toast attempted to invalidate Gratuity's patents on subject matter eligibility grounds in a motion to dismiss. After Adam successfully argued against the motion, the court denied Toast's attempt to dismiss the case. Adam's securing of a favorable ruling on patent eligibility ensured the long-term viability of Gratuity's patent portfolio.

• Prevented a FAANG company's attempt to transfer an infringement case from the Western District of Texas to the Northern District of California. Representing Rafqa Star, LLC in its lawsuit for augmented reality patent infringement, Adam identified key weaknesses in the FAANG company's witness credibility. The case was favorably settled for the client shortly thereafter. 

• Advised a hedge fund on the consequences of ANDA litigation, Orphaned Drug status exclusivity, and patent term extension for a biopharmaceutical company investment. 

• Obtained trademark protection for a client’s beverage company brand.
